I enjoy and appreciate the French accent and its power to help me understand what is going on around me. Its use adds a French flavor to a dish that may be completely different from what I would prefer to eat.
French is a very expressive language. There are lots of words that are very difficult for a non-fluent speaker to say, and even when you have the correct pronunciation, it can be difficult to understand it. In the past, there were various dialects of French that were spoken in various parts of the country, but modern French (which is the form of French I’m most familiar with) is heavily influenced by the French spoken in Paris, which I happen to know of.
Even in Paris, people have a very different take on French from the rest of the country. I’ve been to a few different restaurants and I’ve never seen a customer come in not knowing the words to the menu. In Paris, if they don’t know the words to the menu, they’re just fine, but in the rest of France, it’s different.
When I lived in Paris I was very much aware of the French influence of everything, and I was very observant. However, I found that the French I was learning from in my classes in college were much more French than I was. I can’t speak for the rest of France, but I would be very surprised if a single French person can speak the same language with the same ease as the rest of the world.
This is why we see French-speaking countries like France and Canada so often in movies. A lot of movies are about that culture, and we’re so used to seeing it in all their different forms, that it can be quite hard to see it in the movies.
I am by no means saying that the French are good at expressing themselves through language. Nor am I saying that a single French person is a better speaker of French than all of the people who speak the same language. I am saying that the French are also a lot more likely to be annoyed by a language than the rest of us are.
This is exactly the point I was making about the French people, that their language is so used to talking about things that it can be quite difficult for them to express their thoughts when they see themselves in a movie. The problem is that we Frenchies can’t seem to stop ourselves from getting annoyed by the language. We have a language that is so used to talking about things that it can be quite difficult for us to express our thoughts when we see ourselves in a movie. French is also the most used language in Europe, so we use it so often that we don’t even notice that we’re using it.
It’s not just that we tend to use the language in a way that is a bit too familiar for us. We also speak it with such a thick accent that it seems like we are trying to speak in it. And the last thing we need is a French accent.
I guess we could say we only speak it a bit different, but still a lot of the time we use it in ways that are not appropriate. And we do it so well.
