Many people use the age of consent to make it harder for sexual assault victims to report, but this law isn’t nearly as useful as it is often made out to be. It’s far too simplistic to say that all sexual offenders are adults, but they aren’t. As such, they have a responsibility to be 18, and that should be the age of consent for all citizens.
The problem with the UK’s age of consent is that it only applies to sex between consenting adults. That means that if you arent dating, you are not technically 18 and thus have no responsibility to protect yourself from sexual assault. To a certain extent, this makes sense. That’s probably why the law has such a tendency to “fix” things rather than allow for a more reasonable solution.
The age of consent in most other European countries is at 16. There are exceptions to this, but these are usually cases where a minor is involved, which is different in the UK. The age of consent in the UK is 16 for all forms of consensual sexual activity.
This is a complicated subject, which you should definitely read up on before doing any sort of sexual activity. The age of consent in the UK is 16. The age of consent in Belgium is 16. The age of consent in the Netherlands is 16. The age of consent in Luxembourg is 16.
16 is also the age you can legally be charged with a crime. A “crime” is defined as an “act of a nature to corrupt the public morals.” This is a very broad definition, and there is no set age of consent in the US. However, it is commonly understood that there is no age of consent in the US.
The UK, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium all have age of consent laws. So yes, yes they all have laws about sex. So, it is legal in the US, and yes it is legal to have sex when you are over 18. Only the UK has different laws. The Dutch have very strict laws for all ages, but they do include a higher age of consent for sex (17) than the UK, which is 16.
I am sure there are plenty of European countries (or at least countries with the same legal system as Germany) where the age of consent is different than the US. We don’t know for sure, though. As a matter of fact, I am sure there are.
