Karthigai deepam is one of the famous function celebrated in India in Tamil month of karthigai. In our village, we celebrate karthigai deepam very gently by keeping Agal vilaku in front of our home and around balconies. Our area looks so colourful and beautiful when we see from upstairs, There are so many friends for me in our area we all go together to temple to worship and keep Agalvilaku in the temple.

In that special day, my mom and grandma do so many special items to morning, afternoon and tonight. My grandma does special sweet appam on that morning. We waked early in the morning after getting ready we all kids (totally 5kids) because ours is a joint family totally 12 members among that we are 5 sat around our grandma. We all help our grandma to prepare appam.

We all take one ingredient with us. I usually take Coconut to Grind because I like coconut very much if we add coconut in appam it was so tasty. While telling itself it tempting to eat.


Wheat flour – 1 cup
Rice Flour – 1 cup
Rava – 1 cup
Coconut – 1 cup grated
Jaggery – 1 1/2 cup grated
cardamom – 4 pieces (powder it)
Baking Soda – 3/4 tsp
Ghee – for frying
Salt – 1/2 tsp
Water as needed

Our grandma sat with a big bowl in the kitchen my elder sister take wheat flour, my brother takes rawa, one of my cousin take rice flour, myself coconut and my younger sister sat with jaggery. My grand ma add all ingredients one by one in given proportion. we all disturb my grandma and put some more flours and we play with that, Whatever we do with flour our grandma watch that keenly and add all ingredients correctly. We eat coconut and jaggery before the mix. We fight and enjoy together.

Whatever we do our grandma join together and enjoy with us and she will concentrate only on the item what she is doing. And we all add cardamom, baking soda and the little salt with knowledge of our grandma. After that, she takes water and mixed that flours well. While mixing, she is not just mixing the ingredients she also mixing her love and affection that’s what the item was so tasty. Whatever item she prepare it was so tasty.

In this world, no one will hate grandma. We love grandma than our parents. Because grandma takes care of us whenever our parents scold us. she escape us from that problem too. She mixes that flours with water well it’s in little water consistency. After mixing all ingredients she left for 15 minutes.

She keeps pan on the stove to heat. After the pan well heated she pours ghee each hole in paniyaram pan. She pours cow ghee which was prepared by herself. It smells great. It tempts us to eat. That smell makes us eat we cannot wait still cook we are very eagerly waiting to eat. Our grandma pours that consistency into the paniyaram pan. she leaves still its golden colour.

After it fried well she flips over the paniyaram and leaves to cook well. After it cooked well she placed on a plate. It was so hot. We won’t wait we all take one paniyaram and get ready to eat altogether by saying 1..2…3….. Wowww it was so tasty and crispy… Now we are missing that.
